Buried in ESPN's report on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatening to sue the owners if Goodell's contract is extended (first reported by the New York Times on Wednesday) is a nugget about Goodell being "furious" over the owners' insistence that his new contract should be more performance-based. According to the New York Times, the Cowboys owner has hired the services of high powered attorney David Boyce.

Lockhart added that the league is aware of Jones' potential lawsuit, which apparently has been sparked by star running back Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension over alleged domestic violence. Jones, in fact, has said in recent weeks that the league needs to hire a new commissioner, OTL reported, citing an unidentified source.

Elliott has continued to play while the issue works its way through the courts, but Jones still seems to have turned on Goodell over the suspension.

Jones also has expressed disapproval with the structure and compensation in the contract extension, another person familiar with the proposed lawsuit says. Thanks to that, it is another week of more reports stating there's a rift between Jerry Jones and Roger Goodell.

Jones believes he was lied to by Goodell who told him Elliott, who was never charged or arrested in the case, would face no suspension and considers it an unforgivable breach of trust, according to a source.
Jones is considered one of the most powerful and influential owners in the league.

But most National Football League owners, while recognizing that Goodell has failed in a variety of capacities, know that the commissioner was crucial in negotiating an owner-friendly collective bargaining agreement with the players' union back in 2011.

Last season, Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback then playing with the 49ers, began kneeling during the national anthem before games to protest police killings of unarmed black men in the US.
