Aircraft carrier the USS Nimitz takes part in an exercise in the Bay of Bengal in July 2017 in this US Navy handout

The rare joint drill involving the USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt will begin Saturday, the Navy said in a statement.

The last time three carrier strike groups operated together in the area was in 2006 and 2007 under the auspices of the Valiant Shield exercises off the coast of Guam.

Animosity between the U.S. and the isolated regime could increase further when the first three-aircraft carrier exercise begins on Saturday.

This is the first time in a decade three carrier strike groups will operate together and the event is coinciding with President Donald Trump's Asia visit, the Japan Times reported.

A spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of Defense told EFE in Seoul that the three U.S. aircraft carriers will also carry out maneuvers with the South Korean Navy, closer to North Korean territory, in the Sea of Japan - alternatively called the East Sea in the two Koreas.

Admiral Scott Swift, US Pacific Fleet commander, said: "This exercise in the Western Pacific is a strong testament to the US Pacific Fleet's unique ability and ironclad commitment to the continued security and stability of the region".

Three unclear-powered USA aircraft carrier strike groups will hold training drills in waters off South Korea starting Friday in a show of force against North Korea.

North Korea will be at the top of the agenda as Trump tries to pressure Beijing into cracking down on Pyongyang.

Trump has reiterated his tough rhetoric against North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs since starting a 12-day trip to Asia on Sunday.

Such large-scale drills serve as a potent reminder of the U.S. ability to rapidly mobilize military force, a capability the Trump administration has been keen to emphasize as Pyongyang races ahead with tests to build a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States.

The U.S. 7th Fleet, which announced the exercise yesterday, have said it will demonstrate its resolve with allies Japan and South Korea.

Their presence is a formidable show of force against North Korea.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said Monday that "all the name calling and all the chest beating" by Trump isn't helpful and may actually be increasing the risks of confrontation with North Korea.

The request also includes costs associated with increased United States troop levels in Afghanistan in support of my Administration's South Asia strategy.
