If a deal were reached, it would create a huge powerhouse in the toy industry, uniting Monopoly, Nerf and My Little Pony brands from Hasbro with Mattel's Hot Wheels and iconic Barbie.
Most kids don't care about the difference between Hasbro and Mattel - and according to new reports, the two companies might soon become one.
Combining could be beneficial for both businesses as it would give them more pricing power to negotiate with entertainment studios over TV and movie franchises. Despite the financial concerns, Mattel's ownership of valuable brands makes the toymaker ripe for takeover by Hasbro.
Hasbro, Inc. shares closed at $91.45 on Friday, up $2.76 (+3.11%). Last month, Mattel said the toy retailer's bankruptcy - a result of shifting consumer preference for electronic toys and e-commerce - was a factor in the company's third quarter results and Mattel's sales have fallen 13 percent since previous year. Mattel's shares have slumped 47 percent this year, valuing the company at $4.8 billion and making it more vulnerable as a takeover target. Meanwhile Hasbro's stock is up almost 15% in the previous year.
The takeover offer comes as Mattel has encountered weak sales following the September bankruptcy of Toys "R" Us, the U.S.'s largest toy retailer. Mattel's stock fell to its lowest level since 2009 that day. The terms of a potential deal couldn't be learned, and as always, there may not be one.
Hasbro and Mattel have had talks several times over the years, including in 1996 and again sometime in late 2015.
