The history of Veterans Day
Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans-living or dead-but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
What we now know as Veterans Day was - at its inception - thought to mark the end of war itself.
It wasn't until May of 1938 that the 11th of November became a legal holiday-a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day".
Anyone with information on veterans who served from the area is asked to send information to California PA Vietnam War Honor Roll, P.O. Box 605, California, PA 15419.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War I came to an end.
In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veterans' service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word "Armistice" in favor of "Veterans".

In 1968, the holiday was moved to the fourth Monday in October thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill. The bill was meant to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day.
"Love and gratitude to our veterans on [Veterans Day]".
In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance. We renew our Nation's commitment to support veterans and military families. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important goal of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. They'll be enjoying the spectacle or taking part in the parade itself. We have plenty of organizations locally that serve veterans, such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS and others.
The ceremony will be held November 11 at 11 a.m.at Veterans Memorial on Maple Street.
