Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Saturday stressed that the State of Israel will respond with force to any violation of its sovereignty, after the IDFs' Patriot missile defense system shot down a drone above the Golan Heights, near the border with Syria.

The unmanned aerial vehicle was manufactured in Russian Federation, representative of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Jonathan Conricus told Sputnik.

Israel fired a Patriot missile at a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was headed into Israeli airspace from Syria on Shabbos morning.

However, the military did not provide any further information regarding what kind of UAV was used. "Earlier I told you that it was produced in Russian Federation, but additional checks showed that we can not confirm this information", Conricus said.

Before intercepting the drone, Israel's military contacted Russian counterparts operating over the border to verify that the drone did not belong to the Russians, Haaretz reported. The drone was apparently a Syrian army drone on an intelligence collection mission, the IDF said.

The Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 conflict, has seen spillover violence from the Syrian civil war. Syria demands its return.
