16 drown 7 missing as boat capsizes in Krishna river

A tourist ferry capsized near the Pavithra Sangamam in Ibrahimpatnam on Sunday.

The police had also informed that nine people had drowned in Vaishali.

The incident occurred around 5.45 PM when a private tourism boat was making a trip from Punnami Ghat, Bhavanipuram, to Pavitra Sangamam, Ferry village, the official said.

So far, 15 people have been rescued.

As death toll in the Andhra Pradesh boat capsize incident rose to 16, the state government on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakhs to the families of the bereaved.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and Krishna district authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation to trace the missing people. All thirteen deceased have been identified.

According to The Times of India, the boat capsized because it was overloaded. "As it was nearing the ferry point, it came to a sudden halt as a result of which passengers fell towards one side of the boat and it overturned within seconds", a survivor told the local media persons.

An hour-long ride, it starts on the banks of the Krishna River at Durga Ghat, and allowed people to go up to the Pavithra Sangam.
