Goodell seeks $50 million, private jet for life

13 November 2017, 12:51 | Pamela Mathis

The committee will address Goodell's salary and compensation package. The NFL commissioner supposedly wants that to be bumped up to $50 million, have private jet and health care access for he and his family for life.

It would appear that at least some NFL owners believe Goodell is aiming too high, as one told ESPN there are "several owners in this league who don't make $40 million a year".

IJR previously reported that a conference call was held between National Football League owners where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones led in a direction of halting Goodell's contract. Jones and Goodell have clashed in recent months, most notably about the commissioner's six-game suspension of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.

The committee will discuss a compensation package for Goodell who now makes around $30 million per year.

While executive vice president of communications Joe Lockhart denied the exact figure, the ESPN source said Goodell is standing firm on his demands. "It's offensive. It's unseemly".

The official disputes the notion it was a snub because the leaders would mingle at APEC events over the next 24 hours anyway.

This was also the same call where Texans owner Bob McNair referred to the protesting players as "inmates", which resulted in heavy backlash. The sources suggest that "at best" Jones has maybe three other owners in his corner that Goodell should go, but is nowhere close to the 24 votes required to derail a process that is in essence already completed (pending just a formal signing and announcement, sources said).

"I don't sense that at all from him", one source who is regularly around Goodell told ESPN. "He feels there are important issues he has to deal with". It's also mentioned in the report that Goodell's desired salary is more than some team owners make in a year, outside appreciation of their investment.

Goodell found a friendlier outlet in The MMQB, which did not report the exact numbers but did suggest that Goodell has not only been open to accepting an incentive-laden deal, but he proposed one.

"The problem is, no one is talking about games anymore", said one owner. "It's about concussions, Jones vs. Goodell, Zeke, the anthem".
