Marouane Fellaini will leave Manchester United in January as Jose Mourinho clears space in his squad for a pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

Should Fellaini reach 1st January without signing a new United contract, he would be eligible to formally discuss terms with foreign clubs with a view to a possible pre-contract agreement.

Mourinho was full of praise for Fellaini in the aftermath of the defeat at Chelsea, but it would appear that it was simply an exercise to deflect from the reality of the situation.

It is not thought that United manager Jose Mourinho wants to see Fellaini leave as the Belgium global has formed an important part of his plans since arriving at Old Trafford a year ago.

However, Besiktas have taken the extra step of making public their interest in the midfielder, and images that have surfaced of him in Istanbul suggest that talks between the player and club are already underway.

Mourinho has been told he must sell before he can buy and so the big Belgian is set to move to Turkish club Besiktas for a fee of around £8million, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Letting go of Fellaini will allow Mourinho to pursue a move for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, who has caught the eye of several of Europe's elite clubs with his recent barnstorming performances for the Ukrainian outfit.
