Missile Targeting Saudi Airport Was Iranian, Says US Official

During a visit to the Gulf, Macron blamed Iran for a ballistic missile launch by Yemeni rebels targeting Saudi Arabia last weekend.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has responded to the call of the French President to hold talks on the country's ballistic missile program, firmly rejecting the idea and noting that it is exclusively defensive in nature.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi demanded that France remain "realistic, fair and farsighted" when it comes to matters of the Middle East and Gulf regions, according to a ministry statement released Saturday. "France is fully aware of our country's firm position that Iran's defence affairs are not negotiable", he said.

The comments come in response to French President Emmanuel Macron, who said that there is a need to start negotiations regarding Iran's ballistic missiles. He raised the prospect of possible sanctions with regard to those activities.

He said the ballistic missiles are defensive and unrelated to a nuclear agreement with world powers.

Saudi Arabia and its allies accuse Iran of supplying missiles and other weapons to the Houthis, saying the arms were not present in Yemen before conflict broke out there in 2015.

Harrigian's remarks appear to corroborate Saudi charges attributing the missile to Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of the deal, refusing to recertify that Iran is complying with its obligations and violating the "spirit" of the accord.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly and clearly announced that it will not engage in any kind of dialogue with any country about its missile program within the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or any other deal", Hossein Naqavi Hosseini told the Tasnim News Agency Friday.
