A 3-year-old boy with a known dairy allergy died after eating grilled cheese at his New York City preschool.

The school is conducting its own investigation as well, and the Administration for Children's Services had held services to offer families alternative schooling/care options.

School officials did not call 911, according to Elijah's family, and he was instead taken by his mother to a local hospital.

Elijah Silvera, 3, died November 3, 2017 after an adult gave him a sandwich at the Seventh Avenue Center for Family Services in NY, even though he had a dairy allergy.

The distraught dad lost his boy, Elijah, last Friday to anaphylactic shock not long after he ate the sandwich at the Seventh Avenue Center for Family Services on Lenox Avenue.

Elijah leaves behind his "heartbroken mother, Dina, father, Thomas, and his 5-year-old brother, Sebastian", according to the GoFundMe page, which has raised almost $20,000 by 325 donors in two days.

Elijah's father didn't make it to the hospital in time to see his son before he died, ABC7NY reports. "In the meantime, we closed the Centre for Family Services and continuing to aggressively investigate what happened and whether the facility could have done something differently to prevent this tragedy".

But officials answered few questions Thursday at a news conference six days after the death, declining to say whether the daycare was equipped with something as simple as an EpiPen. "There are protocols that both the hospital and preschool must follow". "As we ease into this unthinkable reality and say goodbye to our sweet, joyful Elijah - and our hopes and dreams for all he would become - we thank you for your support". I don't know if it can be avoided because we don't really know what happened.

Elijah is survived by his parents and a brother.

In a very tragic turn of events, what turned out to be a food distribution mistake by a Harlem area school became fatal accident for one 3-year-old boy.

The guidelines distributed by the city note that each child with a food allergy should have an individual written care plan with details on prevention and treatment. And of those children, 39 percent have a history of severe reactions.

Thomas told ABC that Elijah had "so many different allergies", including peanuts and berries.
