USGSThe earthquake struck close to Iraq's eastern border with Iran

A magnitude 7.4 natural disaster hit an area at the Iranian-Iraqi border on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported.

It struck 32km (20mi) south-west of the Iraqi town of Halabja, the USGS said.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the quake.

State television had previously reported six dead in Qasr-e Shirin, close to the Iraqi border, around 40 kilometres southwest of Azgaleh.

In the province of Sulaimaniyah, located in Iraq's Kurdistan region, residents ran out onto the streets at the time of the quake and some minor property damage was recorded, an AFP reporter said.

Iranian media gave contradictory figures on the number of people killed in the quake.

Iraq's Meteorological Organization issued a warning on state TV urging people to stay away from buildings and to avoid from using elevators, CNN reported.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the natural disaster.

Residents of Turkey's southeastern city of Diyarbakir also reported feeling a strong tremor, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the city.
