Community soundly rejects EA's defense of Battlefront 2's locked heroes

14 November 2017, 01:10 | Max Haynes

As such, not only are such loot boxes an off-putting method of getting us to spend more cash on games, but in cases such as Battlefront 2 they represent a terminal flaw from a game design standpoint, too.

The first actual mission of the campaign takes place in a location familiar to every fan of the Star Wars series and helps to instill a sense of playing alongside the bigger missions of the movies. "Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning". Emperor Palatine, Chewbacca and Leia Organa will now cost 10,000 and Iden will cost 5,000. Microtransactions and "pay-to-win" have become increasingly dominant in gaming over the past decade, and they're still profitable despite players' complaints. In mobile games, whales make up less than 1 percent of players, but account for 50 percent of in-game spending. After a user complained about the cost of unlocking Darth Vader in the upcoming game, EA's community team made a decision to try and smooth the situation over. In a blog post detailing what and why - spoiler: it was the hundreds of thousands of angry people on Reddit - they've announced a dramatic reduction in the cost of unlocking heroes in the game so that you can pick them in battle. That the likes of Darth Vader are only attainable via excessive amounts of grinding is just as much as a design flaw as a poor frame rate or a shoddy camera.

Another player questioned why EA would lock Skywalker and Vader in a Star Wars game, presumably referring to their commonplace presence in the franchise. In response to the outpouring of frustration by the community (and netting EA the "most downvoted Reddit post ever" honor), prices to unlock heroes have been reduced by 75%. Heroes are purchased with points, and you can get more points by paying money.

European Union members ink landmark defense agreement
Ms Mogherini said that by coordinating their efforts, European countries would get better value for money in defence. This has led to unease by European allies that the USA was not committed to the alliance's mutual defense pact.

Now, this isn't exactly a first for the industry. Many players had already preordered the game at full price before hearing that unlocking characters like Darth Vader would require roughly 40 hours of matches.

EA wants players to buy into the economy of Star Wars Battlefront 2, but the publisher doesn't understand what that economy is or what it should be. More information on that AMA will be coming down the pipeline shortly, but for now, head down to the comments section and let us know if this change is enough to get you to reconsider your stance on Battlefront 2. PEDESTRIAN.TV Tech Editor Matt Hopkins wrote "most games these days include some kind of loot system, but the majority are for aesthetic enhancements only".
