Friends rally around Liam Miller as footballer faces cancer battle

Former United and Celtic player Miller battles cancer at age of 36- reports

A number of players have tweeted their support for former football star Liam Miller after it emerged the Irishman is undergoing cancer treatment in the United States.

The Ireland midfielder David Meyler said: "Thoughts go out to him and his family, from the whole team".

Very sad news about one of my old teammates Liam Miller, thinking of him and his family at this very hard time.

"He's a very young man, 36 years of age".

Miller progressed through the youth ranks at Celtic before being handed his league debut in May 2000 - a month before O'Neill took over as manager.

Speaking at his press conference this morning ahead of the second leg of Ireland's World Cup play-off against Denmark, O'Neill offered his support to the former midfielder.

Tweets sent by the ex-Republic of Ireland international's former clubs and team-mates suggest that he is battling a serious illness, with Tam McManus, Alex Bruce and Noel Hunt having mentioned cancer in their messages.

"Awful news about Liam Miller keep the fingers crossed that he somehow pulls through", McManus tweeted.

Miller started his professional career with Celtic before moving to United in the summer of 2004.

A short spell at Loftus Road was followed by stints at Hibernian, Australian clubs Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, home-town club Cork City and, most recently, Wilmington Hammerheads in America.

Miller was part of the Sunderland squad that won promotion to the Premier League in 2007 but moved again in 2009, this time to QPR.
