Several people were wounded at the school, said Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District.

"I'm told the suspected shooter was deceased by law enforcement bullets", Mr Johnston said.

Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told the KCRA news network that the assailant was killed by police following the shooting, which began around 8:00 am (1600 GMT) at a home in Tehama County and continued at the Rancho Tehama Elementary School. The kids who were at the school are in a safe location, Johnston said.
