Meetings with Xi, Putin were productive - Rody

In Vietnam, before going to Manila, Trump said he wanted to move on from allegations that Russian Federation meddled in United States elections.

MANILA, Philippines President Donald Trump headed for home Tuesday following an extensive tour of Asia that he said had been "tremendously successful" and had put the world on notice that the "rules have changed" for countries that want to trade with the U.S.

"At the age of 16, I killed somebody", he said.

"I think the fruits of our labor are going to be incredible, whether it's security of our nations, whether it's security of the world or whether it's trade", Trump said. Instead, Trump said he and Duterte "had a great relationship", and avoided questions about whether he raised human rights concerns in a meeting with the Philippine leader.

The Chinese leader, however, would not back down on Beijing's territorial claim, Duterte said and justified his decision not to immediately demand Chinese compliance with a ruling by a United Nations-linked tribunal that invalidated China's sweeping claims in the South China Sea on historical grounds.

President Rodrigo Duterte and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, Friday.

With the two references, Trump seemed to be underlining the policy laid out by his secretary of state Rex Tillerson last month when the latter had sought cooperation among the democracies of the Indo-Pacific region to ensure peace and stability in the region.

They also say it has uncomfortable similarities with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's salute.

"We've made some very big steps with regard to trade - far bigger than anything you know", Trump told reporters, pointing to business deals forged between USA and foreign companies.

Despite all that, they later issued a joint statement saying they "underscored that human rights and the dignity of human life are essential, and agreed to continue mainstreaming the human rights agenda in their national programs".

Duterte won last year's presidential elections after promising to eradicate illegal drugs with an unprecedented crackdown that would see up to 100,000 people killed.

"(They) should deny the architect of this human rights calamity the global recognition he undeservedly craves".

Though the USA administration has been under pressure to raise Duterte's drug war in Manila, Trump will likely focus on building rapport and personal friendship with his Filipino counterpart.

Duterte says there are three million drug addicts in the Philippines, and he'd like them all dead. Human rights groups believe the victim total is far higher, perhaps closer to 9,000.

Donald Trump has been caught in one of the most awkward moments of his presidency so far during a "family" photo at the start of a regional summit in the Philippines.

In particular, this was due to the Trump administration's explicit and conscious decision to prioritise strategic cooperation with Asian allies over promotion of human rights and democracy values.
