Russian Federation re-published the video writing, "The U.S. are actually covering the ISIS combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote the American interests in the Middle East".

The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday accused the US -led coalition of interfering with the Russian air force to protect retreating Islamic State (IS) militants.

An image circulated by the Russian military Tuesday purportedly showing "irrefutable evidence" of USA forces assisting Islamic State terrorists was actually taken from a 2015 video game.

The US Embassy in Moscow said in a statement posted on Twitter that "the US is not going to spend time on the nonsensical claims by the Russian ministry of defense accusing us of complicity with ISIS, using images from video games and old photos of military operations in another country".

Shortly after the Russian defense ministry posted the photos, social media users quickly identified the fakes.

In violation of a previously reached agreement, attack aircraft of the coalition entered the airspace over Abu Kamal to hamper the work of the Russian air force, the ministry said in a statement.

Russia's Ministry of Defence has posted what it called "irrefutable proof" of the U.S. aiding so-called Islamic State - but one of the images was actually taken from a video game.

Russia, which entered the conflict in late 2015 on the side of Bashar al-Assad's government, has long accused the west of backing extremist groups in Syria.

Commenters picked up the fact that the Russian MOD published a video from a video game and subsequently mocked the mistake.

"We find this behavior particularly disappointing and inconsistent with the spirit of the November 11 joint statement by the President of the United States and the President of the Russian Federation", said Maj.

Responding to Russia's allegations in remarks carried by Reuters, a spokesman for the US-led coalition Col Ryan Dillon said the Russian allegations were "about as accurate as their air campaign".

The Kremlin denied that Putin had shown the wrong footage to the American director Oliver Stone during one of a series of interviews.
