S. Korean Navy, 3 US Carriers to Conduct Joint Drill

The South Korean military said that the USS Ronald Reagan, the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt will stage a joint drill with the South Korean Navy on Sunday afternoon in the Korea theater of operations (KTO) off the country's east coast. This is the first time that three carrier strike groups have operated together in the Western Pacific since exercises Valiant Shield 2006 and 2007 off the coast of Guam.

North Korean military personnel are reportedly preparing for their winter training exercises as three United States aircraft carriers lurk near the Korean Peninsula in an unprecedented show of force by Washington's navy.

"But our military is keeping a full readiness posture against the possibility of North Korea's provocations", a South Korean official was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.

Washington "is now running amok for war exercises by introducing nuclear war equipment in and around the Korean Peninsula, thereby proving that the USA itself is the major offender of the escalation of tension and undermining of the peace", the letter read.

A rarely seen three-carrier force including the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt is finishing a major exercise in the Western Pacific, demonstrating the Navy's unique ability to operate multiple carrier strike groups.

But Pyongyang has seen any U.S. military exercises as a threat.

He also said the United States is maintaining "a surprise strike posture with frequent flights of B-1B and B-2 formations to the airspace of South Korea".

However, Pyongyangs state news agency accused the US and South Korea of attempting to escalate tensions in the region.

"North Korean news outlets described the carriers" presence as a provocation, and officials in Pyongyang told CNN that they are concerned that Trump intends to start a conflict.

"Nobody knows when and how the "war maniac" Trump will ignite the 'wick of war, '" the officials said, referring to the presence of the carriers near the peninsula.

A South Korean military official said in a briefing: "Currently, the North Korean troops are conducting ordinary field exercises".
