Earlier on Tuesday the youth wing of Zimbabwe's ruling party accused Chiwenga of subverting the constitution for threatening military intervention.

But his downfall appeared to pave the way for his wife Grace to succeed her 93-year-old husband.

Gen Constantino Chiwenga, Zimbabwe's army chief, has warned President Robert Mugabe and ruling Zanu-PF party after the sacking of vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, The Guardian reports.

President Robert Mugabe's famous "blue house" or "blue roof" has been sealed off by heavily armed military personnel, Khuluma Afrika has confirmed.

In a statement, the party spokesman said Chiwenga's stance was "clearly calculated to disturb national peace... and suggests treasonable conduct on his part as this was meant to incite insurrection".

The Zanu-PF party is "not personal property for you and your wife to do as you please", he said, according to The Guardian newspaper.

Eyewitnesses also said on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ time) that army tanks were seen about 20 kilometres west of the capital, Harare.

Zimbabwe was plunged into crisis when Mr Mugabe sacked Mr Mnangagwa, a 75-year-old veteran of Zimbabwe's liberation wars, last week.

Some of the army top brass are seen as strongly opposed to Grace Mugabe's apparent emergence as the likely next president.

"We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that, when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", Chiwenga said in a statement read to reporters at the news conference.

eNCA's Zimbabwean correspondent Pindai Dube confirmed the tanks were visible in the streets of Harare, with sources indicating it was a "show of force" rather than a coup.

"As a result of squabbling within the ranks of Zanu-PF, there has been no meaningful development in the country for the past five years".

Mnangagwa was subsequently fired from the party and has since left the country.

Chiwenga on Monday issued a hard hitting statement urging the ruling party to stop expulsion of party members with a liberation war background.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Chiwenga, a perceived Mnangagwa loyalist, said the purges must stop.

Grace, now poised to become a vice president, did not fight in the liberation war.
