Doctors Mehta and Gupta had declared dead the 22-week-old premature babies on November 30.

But when they were driving to the cremation ground, the family noticed one of the bags moving and found the little boy still alive.

Announcing the termination of the two doctors, the hospital said in a statement: "While the inquiry by the expert group which includes external experts from IMA is still in process, we have chose to terminate the services of the two treating doctors".

The bodies of the twins were handed to the parents in plastic bags.

New Delhi police are continuing to review hospital records as well as video footage from the twins' birth to better understand how the doctor's arrived at the conclusion. "After we traveled ... we felt a movement in one", said the babies' grandfather. "They haven't told us whether he'll survive". India's health minister, JP Nadda, called the incident "heartbreaking".

According to local media, they rushed the newborn to a nearby hospital where they found that the baby boy was alive and is now being treated at a nursing home in New Delhi.

Max Healthcare said it was "shaken and concerned at this rare incident" and announced on Monday that the two treating doctors would be sacked. The privately run Max Hospital said in a statement that "this strict action has been taken on the basis of our initial discussions with experts".

Meanwhile, Delhi police investigating the case have asked hospital authorities to present themselves in the police station. Dr. KK Aggarwal, president of the association, attempted to take some heat off the fired physicians. "The difference between a mistake and negligence is deliberate action".

"I wouldn't have opened the polythene if it weren't for the ladies of the family - they insisted on seeing the boy's face", said Rohit Kumar, the child's father.

The premature baby, weighing less than 500g (1lb), was rushed back to hospital but died a short time later.
