Called Datally, the new app from Google will let users tackle down data consumption by making them better aware of the app and time based consumption of data. Android users will now see Google Safe Browsing warnings on app and websites that collect the user's personal data without their consent.
As one example, Stanton said an application would not be permitted to send data unrelated to the app during app analytics and crash reporting sessions without it first notifying the user of what it is doing and obtaining permission for that transmission. If the data is not functional to the working of the app, an explanation will be required so that the user can choose to give or not give access.
Google plans to show these warnings via the Google Play Protect service that's built into the official Play Store app. And now, it's launching a new app entirely dedicated for the same on Android platforms. Developers should refer to the Unwanted Software Help Center. Further, if the apps save information that is not necessary they are needed to explain users how the data is going to be used.
The section covers requirements for how an in-app data-usage disclosure must be displayed and how the app needs to request user consent.
Google just recently listed new rules that ban apps from displaying ads on user's lock screen. So if you're a developer and your app collects personal data, you have a little under two months to get your apps to comply with these new rules.
