Last month, Adams announced an investment of more than $55 million from Borough Hall to advance STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education across more than 150 schools in FY2018. "To get the next generation job ready and help attract new businesses to our state, we need to encourage more students to develop coding and computer science skills".
Jean Yang, a computer scientist and technology blogger, explains that "computer science is the study of what machines can do for us".
The Hour of Code is dedicated to changing that. The North Dakota event will be attended by Governor Doug Burgum, who is a leader in promoting STEM education. Under each block is a line of Java code and the students can "look under the hood" to see the actual code which is being used. Through Code Brooklyn, the borough's schools have been expanding computer science education by training teachers, building curriculum and infrastructure and getting support from parents. TEALS students from Quincy, Washington, will join Seattle Seahawk Luke Willson at the Microsoft Store at Bellevue Square Mall as he takes younger students through an Hour of Code.
Organizers believe middle school is the ideal age to introduce girls to opportunities they could have in high school. More than 400 partners support Code.org's Hour of Code, including major tech companies such as Amazon.com Inc., Facebook Inc., Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

"Computer programming skills are critical for many 21st century jobs", Gov. Cooper said. The in-person event will be hosted by Detroit native Charles "Stacy" Harris, an app development architect for Microsoft, who first learned how to code by teaching himself from a book his father bought at Radio Shack (pictured on the right).
Don Carlson, Education Director at Microsoft Asia Pacific, has been encouraging schools across the region to make computer science available to students because, "Coding empowers young people, giving them the tools they need to not only express themselves, but also transform the way they think critically and solve complex problems".
"Computer science plays a significant role in revolutionizing business & industry, creating new fields of commerce, and driving technological breakthroughs across all fields of science", said Governor Ducey before his arrival to the event.
