San Marcos Police Officer Kenneth Copeland who was shot and killed Monday leaves behind a wife and four children

San Marcos officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, was killed in the line of duty Monday when he was shot multiple times while serving a warrant.

Officials did not disclose the identity of the suspect nor the charge for which he was wanted.

A thin blue line has been added to the San Marcos police badge in the department's lobby.

At a news conference, Police Chief Chase Stapp said Copeland had been with the department for 19 years.

Chief Stapp said other SMPD officers and the Hays County SWAT tried to negotiate with the suspect to get him out of the house peacefully. It's unknown if the injury was from an officer's gun or his own.

The escort will leave Austin at approximately 3:30 p.m. and travel southbound on I-35 to Wonder World Drive, then on to RR 12. "Ken's a hero", Stapp said. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows that we're short-handed and need the help.

Despite wearing protective gear, the shots struck the officer. We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day. The shooting was said to have occurred near Bowie Elementary School in Texas.

"I want to offer my thoughts, my condolences and my prayers for Officer Copeland's family, his wife and his four children, and his family within the walls of this police department", Stapp said. "I think you have to say it is a one-off". "There's only a few that really mesh with our environment, and Ken Copeland was so highly respected".
