Keisha Lance Bottoms elected Atlanta's new mayor, touts Black girl magic
- Atlanta mayoral candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms stopped by Good Day Atlanta Wednesday morning after declaring herself the victor of the runoff.
The margin was razor-thin, with several hundred votes separating Keisha Lance Bottoms and Mary Norwood.
"We knew it would be close", Bottoms told Good Day Atlanta's Buck Lanford.
"I don't expect there will be any change following the recount", Bottoms said.
A Norwood victory would mean Atlanta - a gentrifying city where the African American share of the population remains a majority but has gone down over the years - would have its first white mayor in more than 40 years. Her victory also would continue the Democratic Party's hold on an office it has held without interruption since 1879.
Still, numerous city's most formidable challenges transcend race. Everyone seems to care about transportation, public safety and affordable housing. "That's a huge issue that we have to address".
Champions League group stage reaches climax
However, if they fail to win and the Spanish club beat Chelsea , then it would likely send Roma out at the group stage. Amid sluggish ticket sales, Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco has been urging fans to show up at the Stadio Olimpico.
As voters went to the polls Tuesday, none spoke openly of race.
"After I sleep, we'll start refocusing on the transition", she said.
James Parson, a 49-year-old black man who also lives in Bottoms' district, said he appreciates how Norwood has made herself available to constituents all over the city as an at-large council member.
Acknowledging this history, Norwood said, "I've done this before".
"The votes for Ms. Bottoms have come primarily from the south side of the city, which is predominantly African-American, and the votes for Ms. Norwood came from the north end of the city which is predominantly white".
Bottoms will be the second Black woman to lead the city of Atlanta as mayor following Shirley Franklin, who served from 2002 to 2010.
