IPL franchises will spend Rs 480-640 crore on players next season

Effectively, the IPL Governing Council has enabled CSK and Rajasthan Royals, the two franchises which will make a comeback to the league in the 2018 edition after serving a two-year suspension for alleged spot-fixing and betting, to retain the players which were on their 2015 roster.

As per the governing council's decision, a franchise can retain five players using one of the two combinations - three pre-auction retentions and two RTMs or two pre-auction retentions and three RTMs.

As for the franchise squad size, each team has to have a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 25 players, which also includes up to eight overseas cricketers.

The Indian Premier League Governing Council along with the Committee of Administrators (CoA) met in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss IPL Player retention policy, salary cap, player regulations and other related issues. Franchises will have to spend a minimum of 75% of the salary cap for each season, the GC clarified. If there is no retention before player auction then the franchises can have up to three ATM. The other two replacement teams were formed Rising Pune Supergiants where Dhoni captaining in 2016 IPL season and Gujarat Lions for the replacement of Rajasthan Royals.

MS Dhoni is likely to be retained by Chennai Super Kings. Interestingly, the GC made a decision to let the teams retain a maximum of 3 capped Indian cricketers.

The auction for the new IPL season will begin in February. The report said that Rajasthan Royals wanted everyone to go back to the auction pool again.
