Proposal To Impeach Trump Overwhelmingly Rejected

Donald Trump

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi has advised Democrats to exercise caution and wait until sufficient evidence that Trump committed an impeachable offense turns up.

The Democratic leaders said, "Right now, Congressional committees continue to be deeply engaged in investigations into the President's actions both before and after his inauguration". Republicans are expected to offer a motion to table the resolution later Wednesday, effectively killing Green's resolution.

Green argued that Trump should be impeached for his rhetoric against certain racial and ethnic groups, including Latinos, Muslims and blacks.

Lawmakers voted 364 to 58 in rejection of liberal Democrat Al Green's resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against the Republican president.

"Therefore, Donald John Trump by causing such harm to the society of the United States is unfit to be President and warrants impeachment, trial, and removal from office", the resolution concludes.

As examples, Green's articles of impeachment cite Trump's equivocating response to the violence from a white supremacist march in Charlottesville, Va., in August, as well as his attacks on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

Border arrests fall, deportations soar in Trump's first year
Those arrests have sparked fear and anger in immigrant communities, where many worry the government is now targeting them. The drop brings arrests along the US-Mexico border to the lowest level since 1971, according to immigration officials.

The White House quickly dismissed the impeachment effort, labeling Green and his allies "extremists".

"Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment", they wrote in a statement. The motions must be considered by the House and so Democrats will be forced to go on record about whether to impeach the president, CNN said.

The House has to approve the articles of impeachment by a simple majority before they would move on to the Senate.

Several Democratic lawmakers argued that it's premature to act before special counsel Robert Mueller's team completes its Russian Federation investigation.

Pelosi and Hoyer released a joint statement ahead of a floor vote on articles of impeachment sponsored by Rep. Al Green.

Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee of MI says Democratic lawmakers can't let themselves be drawn into a process "that's not thoughtful or complete or might not even be the conclusion we ought to draw".
