Senate confirms Kirstjen Nielsen to head Homeland Security

Senate Advances Kirstjen Nielsen's Nomination for DHS Secretary Post

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Deputy White House chief of staff Kirstjen Nielsen as President Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

The Washington Post reported Trump nominated Nielsen largely based on Kelly's advice and she has never led a federal agency or private company.

As leader of the Department of Homeland Security, Nielsen will oversee a massive bureaucracy of almost 250,000 employees that help ensure the security of the IT assets of federal civilian agencies as well as the nation's critical infrastructure. Nielsen was the second woman to head this ministry after Janet Napolitano, who was in office from 2009 to 2013.

The Post summarized Nielsen's career by noting that she worked at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and then as a White House adviser for emergency preparedness and disaster management under President George W. Bush.

Despite increasing prominence in the national conversation, cybersecurity was a secondary topic during Nielsen's confirmation hearing.

Nielsen will take over for Acting Secretary Elaine Duke, and will be sworn-in sometime in the coming days.

Senators approved Nielsen's nomination, 62-37, on Tuesday.

When asked for her views on the utility of a border wall with Mexico, she echoed comments made previously by Kelly that the United States did not need a 2,000-mile physical barrier "from sea to shining sea".

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said Nielsen has played a role in several questionable Trump administration decisions, including a travel ban to restrict entry from six mostly Muslim countries, termination of a program for young immigrants and what Harris called a "feeble response to Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey".

Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs.

Still, Nielsen received strong endorsements from Republicans, in and out of Congress, including two former DHS secretaries: Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff.

Nielsen, Kelly's protégé, now takes over the DHS as Trump looks to make his long-promised border wall a reality and to continue cracking down on immigration.

As we noted in that report, the Trump administration's actions left Original DACA recipients unaffected. However, Trump's recent statement indicates that instead of eliminating DACA, he merely wants to legitimize it by replacing Obama's executive orders with legislative authority.
