Amazon Prime Video Finally Available on Apple TV

08 December 2017, 12:47 | Ross Houston

Welcome to the Voice Wars

There's No Great Reason to Buy an Amazon Fire TV Anymore

Ever since its first iteration, one of the Apple TV's major weaknesses has been its lack of an Amazon Video app. Apple listened to customer complaints, and promised way back in September that the service would make its way to the premium streaming box in question.

The Prime Video app for the Apple TV supports numerous Apple TV features, this included Siri and the TV app, this allows you to search for videos on Prime from the main TV interface. But the rivalry between Apple and Amazon came to an end after Apple TV was allowed on Amazon's website. Apple TV owners can find Amazon Video in the App Store, and download it for free.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook had said in June that Amazon's streaming service would be available for Apple devices later this year.

Yesterday the two companies announced that - finally - that very app had now gone live, with Vice President of Prime Video Mark Eamer saying in a statement: "There is nothing that excites us more than delighting our customers, and we are THRILLED for them to stream Prime Video on Apple TV". But the company did say that did not block consumer services and that Amazon users could still reach the website version of YouTube.com on the Echo Show and Fire TV. With this, you'll be able to connect to your broadband through your TV and stream movies as well as view your picture and videos stored on your iCloud.

From Archer's reporting, it appears that Amazon is aware of the issue, and may already have moved to cover its tracks.

IPL franchises will spend Rs 480-640 crore on players next season
In the subsequent years, the franchises will be allowed to shell out Rs 82 crore (in 2019) and Rs 85 crore (in 2020). For the 2018 IPL season, the salary budgets for the IPL teams have also been increased to 80 crores from 66 crores.

Audio descriptions of Dolby 5.1 sound have been removed from selected movies on the Apple TV Prime TV app. Both promise streaming in 4K resolution, voice-activated remotes, an ethernet jack for plugging into high-speed Internet (important if you want to stream in 4K) and access to many channels.

Meanwhile, Amazon had never even released a Prime Video app for Apple TV devices, seemingly due to the same dispute over what cut of payments Apple demands. And given iOS users' tendency to spend lots of money, supporting Apple platforms is just good business.

The logo of Amazon is seen at the company logistics center in Lauwin-Planque, northern France, February 20, 2017.

Tech firms have their own way of engaging in a fight.
