Ireland has been told to brace itself for the first snowfalls of the winter.
Widespread sharp ground frost will form tonight along with icy patches ahead of another cold day on Friday.
Phil Stockford, emergency planning manager at Highways England, said: "Gritters are out treating our routes around the clock, but it is still important to drive to the conditions when snow is forecast". It will turn increasingly wintry with biting north-west winds.
Sleet and snow will continue to fall into Saturday night, mainly over northern areas, while it will remain cold across the country.
Northwest winds will fresh to strong and gusty.
"Mainly dry across the south and southwest". Temperatures will be low and it will stay cold for most of next week.
