Bruised heel forces Steyn out of Test and series

South African pacer Dale Steyn

CONFIRMED! Dale Steyn ruled out of India series

The 34-year-old Steyn may bat if necessary, but South Africa will now have to try winning the Test with three pacemen and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.

A team spokesman said the injury was being assessed and treated. Considering he has only played 20 first-class matches there is not much to back it all up, although he did hit a century in just one session in his last Test innings that should have at least set off some warning bells.

"He is unlikely to bowl in this Test match because the recovery period for this could be anything from four to six weeks, which means he could be out for the series".

In the only cricket since his injury, Steyn bowled 18 overs in five Twenty20 matches for his franchise, the Titans, as well as 12 overs in a low-key appearance for an Invitation XI against the touring Zimbabweans in December.

"He likes to play his natural game by playing shots". We sat at tea and thought of gameplans and what to do to stop the momentum. We need more hard work but we will take it at the end of the day.

Pandya's heroics was not consigned to the willow alone though. Hardik Pandya claimed the wickets of openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar.

At the media conference after the day's play, Rabada was asked what target they were looking at for India to chase in the fourth innings.

"It is tough to say what fourth innings score we are looking for right now".

Nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada And Hashim Amla will continue with the bat on Sunday for the home tram as they look to extend their lead and shore up their strong position. So I think it's a wicket where you need a little bit of luck. "India are not just going to roll over and we understand that".
