US President Donald Trump on Saturday praised himself as "not smart, but genius... and a very stable genius at that", following the release of a bombshell new book that called into doubt his mental health.

As for the tweets: "He feels he can go around the press and get his perspective out by tweeting", explained Kelly.

Mr Trump "seemed to have liked - or not disliked" the story Wolff wrote for the Hollywood Reporter, though it was unclear whether he had actually read it.

He tweeted that critics are "taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence".

Who in the world thought it was an acceptable idea to go on the record about the Trump White House? "I went to - I had a situation where I was a very excellent student and came out and made billions and billions of dollars became one of the top business people".

Fairly reported or not, there's little doubt that Michael Wolff's White House tell-all, Fire and Fury, has had an indelible impact.

Angry: President Trump has hit back at author Michael Wolff's book on the presidency the only way he knows how - with anger and Twitter.

During the press conference, Trump also addressed recent reports that he had asked for Attorney General Jeff Sessions not to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, saying that "Everything I've done is 100 percent proper".

He said the group discussed a variety of topics, from national security and infrastructure to the military and the budget.

The credibility of the various accounts in Wolff's book have come under intense scrutiny; however, WIBC host Tony Katz notes that if Wolff does in fact have legitimate recordings of staffers talking about Trump, "all bets are off". I ran for president one time and won and then I hear this guy who doesn't know me at all'.

He said he's had some "incredible meetings" with Republican congressional leaders and Cabinet members at Camp David as they ready their 2018 legislative agenda.

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, said Trump had associated his presidency with causes rooted in bigotry and racism. I guess sloppy Steve brought him in the White House quite a bit and it was one of those things.

He added: "I look at the past year and what (Trump) inherited: a crisis in Afghanistan, North Korea, the Middle East at war, an European Union pulling itself apart and the United States wondering what we do about this". Mr Kim "knows I'm not messing around. If I weren't involved they wouldn't be talking at all right now", Mr Trump said, but made clear his stance.

On the topic of North Korea, he said he would "absolutely" engage in phone conversations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Mr. Trump also wants to address the problem of drug "pouring into this country and how to stop it".
