Passengers forced to evacuate after two plane collision at Toronto Airport

07 January 2018, 08:43 | Austin Hogan

A spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board, Canada's transportation regulator, said a team was headed to the airport to investigate.

Pearson Airport said on Twitter that fire and emergency crews had responded to an "incident involving two aircraft" at its Terminal 3, and that passengers had been evacuated.

Passengers aboard a WestJet flight inbound from Cancun, Mexico, were evacuated from the aircraft via emergency slides and nobody on board was injured.

The WestJet flight was carrying 168 passengers and a crew of six at the time of the collision.

Video footage shows flames coming from one of the planes as passengers are heard screaming.

But passengers have offered accounts of confusion aboard the plane and allegations that procedures were not clearly communicated.

"Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide". "We looked out the window and saw that the plane had backed up into us".

He says he was in a seat opposite the part of the plane that was struck, and he wasn't able to hear instructions from crewmembers or the pilot over the commotion.

She only realised how serious the situation had been once she was out of the plane.

"The incident occurred when our employee was pushing back the plane from the gate", Pierre Payette, Swissport Canada Handling Inc vice president of operations for Toronto, said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

"I'm sure they did their best, but. they kept saying "be seated, remain seated" as the fire was going on outside", he said.
