Haley's Iran Session at UN Turns Into Defense of Nuclear Deal

Russia: US exploiting Iran protest to sink nuclear deal

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif ridiculed U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday over what he called the foreign policy "blunder" of trying to raise its recent protests at the UN Security Council. But Russia and some other countries said the UN's most powerful body had no business weighing in on the demonstrations.

Earlier in the week, the USA government announced it was suspending security assistance to the country. "Nothing will stop Americans from standing in solidarity with them".

But Russia's ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said the U.S. was "abusing the platform of the Security Council". "The Iranian regime is now on notice: The world will be watching what you do". The U.S. called the United Nations meeting on Friday, portraying the protests as a human rights issue that could spill over into an worldwide problem.

This could all change if the mass demonstration in the country continues and the Iranian authorities resort to clearly systematic, oppressive and brutal methods to deal with them.

Under its charter, the United Nations empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to global friction".

"Why is the United States, a permanent member of the Security Council and one of the authors of the UN Charter, undermining the authority of the Security Council as the main body responsible for maintaining global peace and security?"

Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom said his country hoped the meeting could "work as a preventive measure to avoid further escalation of violence".

'Iranian govt should respect their people's rights, including right to express themselves.

At the forefront of resistance to the Islamist mullahs' bloody crackdown on pro-democratic protesters are U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. They also called on the Iranian government to take serious steps in releasing protesters and opposition members who have been arrested.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people have attended pro-government rallies in recent days.

The United Kingdom's ambassadorto the United Nations has encouraged all member states to stay committed to the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), IRNA reports.

Trump's administration has denied having any hand in the demonstrations, saying they arose completely spontaneously. The CIA declined to comment. The Iranian people know the truth and we know the truth. He also has described Iran as "failing at every level" and declared it is "TIME FOR CHANGE!" Speaking in his national capacity, he said his country considered the developments in Iran to be a domestic issue that did not fall under the mandate of the Security Council.

The Jerusalem post reported that the sanctions will target Iran's Shahid Bakeri Industrial Group, which is "responsible for the development and production of control systems, fiber materials, solid-propellant and motor cases critical to Iran's ballistic missiles".
