Kane scores twice as Tottenham beat AFC Wimbledon

Tottenham Team Manager Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Lamela speak to the media during a Tottenham Hotspur training session at AAMI Park

Liverpool finally sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £145million this weekend, months after the Brazil playmaker first decided he wanted a switch to Spain.

Son has largely been overshadowed by strike partner Harry Kane, who ended 2017 as Europe's top goal-scorer with 56 goals to his name in all competitions for club and country.

In fact, the visitors were only inches away from taking a shock lead when Jimmy Abdou's shot was tipped onto the bar by Michel Vorm in the first half.

But he concedes it would be tough to keep his best player if he wants out.

Speaking after Tottenham's 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the FA Cup, Pochettino highlighted the challenge facing every club in the modern game.

'I think Liverpool wanted to keep him but it is hard to keep him, and look what happened with Cristiano Ronaldo with Manchester (United), (Zinedine) Zidane with Juventus, (Luis) Figo with Barcelona.

United have been linked with Kane constantly in recent years and they are one of the few clubs who could realistically afford him if Tottenham ever made a decision to cash-in. If another club pays the type of money [Barcelona] pay, how do you stop it?

Asked specifically about Kane, Pochettino said: 'I think Harry is special, so special, because he loves Tottenham and he feels Tottenham.

"Today is today and after tomorrow you always doubt what happens". I hear what clubs say.

Tottenham now take their place in the draw for the next round, but for a long time it seemed they might be taken to replay by the side 58 league places below them.

"But in football you can not be sure".

"And of course this present at Tottenham, this future at Tottenham, this project is so exciting and I hope, we hope, that all together we spend a lot of time here and try to win trophies and achieve what we want".
