Road accident on Delhi-Chandigarh highway kills four powerlifting players

The six athletes were going from Delhi to Panipat in a Swift Dezire compact sedan, carrying their powerlifting kits, when they met with the accident at 4 am near Alipur village, close to the Singhu border between Delhi and Haryana. Yadav 28, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship for India.

Yadav had won gold in the push-pull raw powerlifting competition in the juniors 82.5kg category at the World Grand Prix held by the Global Powerlifting Alliance and the International Powerlifting Organisation in Slovakia previous year.

Another weightlifter, Rohit, 19, is battling for life.

According to primary investigation, the vehicle in which these athletes were travelling hit a road divider and crashed into a pole on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.

The four lifters - Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish Roy - were rushed to the Raja Harishchandra Hospital, but were declared "dead on arrival".

The injured athletes were admitted at a private hospital in Delhi. "He has internal bleeding in the head", said a senior doctor at AIIMS.

Oil retreats after hitting 2015 highs
WTI prices were further boosted by an EIA report of a 4.6 million barrel weekly drop in USA commercial crude storage levels. Oil hit its highest since May 2015 this week, supported by falling inventories, strong demand and high Opec compliance.

According to the Times of India, the vehicle lost control while overtaking another auto, following which, it rammed into a pole and overturned.

Such was the impact of the crash that the auto - a Maruti Swift Dzire with registration number DL4CAU 9585 - rolled over several times before coming to a stop.

"All the deceased and injured are from Haryana and stayed in different places in (north) Delhi's Timarpur area".

"Prima facie, the vehicle was at very high speed". The driver could not see the electricity pole. Some liquor bottles have been found in the auto hinting towards a possibility of drunken driving.

Police are also probing the angle of drunken driving.
