Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi listens during a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Dec. 11. Both men are expected to be re-elected in the first months of 2018 likely without facing a serious challenge at the ballot box

Although he has yet to formally announce his candidacy for the 2018 election, Sisi is widely expected to do so and to earn a landslide victory due to the absence of competitive challengers in the presidential bid.

Eligible voters will cast their ballot in the election on March 26-28, while expatriates will vote on March 16-18, said Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Lasheen Ibrahim in a press conference.

The results from the first round will be announced on April 2.

Egyptians living overseas are to cast their votes on March 16-18, he added, with second round ballots on April 19-21 if necessary.

"I have realized that I would not be the ideal person to run the state affairs during the coming period.

Hence, I've decided I am not intending to run in Egypt's presidential elections in 2018".

Egypt's ex-PM Shafik says won't run for presidency

However, he announced on Sunday his final decision not to run for the presidential elections.

NAN reports that Egyptian human rights lawyer and opposition leader Khaled Ali said in November that he would challenge President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in the 2018 presidential election, provided he is not barred from the contest.

"Final results will be announced on May 1", he said.

The upcoming presidential elections are Egypt's third since the January 25 uprising.

In November, former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq also announced his intention to return from the United Arab Emirates, where he had resided since 2012, in order to run in the 2018 Egyptian elections.
