Calgary-based Westjet said it had unconfirmed reports of "minor injuries" in the incident, but that all 168 passengers and six crew members on board its plane were safe and accounted for. "There were no Sunwing crew or passengers onboard at the time of the incident", it said. The empty plane's wing burst into flames after the collision, causing panic among passengers on the WestJet aircraft.

Video footage shared on social media appeared to show the tail of one aircraft aflame and spewing black smoke, and later images indicated that it was Sunwing's plane.

Passengers were forced to evacuate on emergency slides and flamed erupted after two planes collided on the ground at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Friday night, NBC News reported.

Amid the screams, one person yelled: 'Calm down, that's not our plane on fire'.

"Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide".

The Toronto engineer says he was in a seat opposite the part of the plane that was struck, and he wasn't able to hear instructions from flight crew or the pilot over the commotion.

"A Sunwing aircraft, under tow by our ground handling service provider, came into contact with another aircraft". A spokesman for the Transport Safety Board, Canada's transportation regulator, said that a team was headed to the airport to investigate. "Out of nowhere there was an audible crunch and the plane rocked slightly".

It added that operations were being challenged by the extremely cold weather.

'We looked out the window and saw that the plane had backed up into us.
