Delhi Police cancels Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani's public meet over 'security concerns'
Four days after an FIR was registered against the newly-elected Gujarat MLA from Vadgam Jignesh Mewani and JNU student Umar Khalid for their alleged involvement in inciting Pune's Bhima-Koregaon violence last week, the former on Tuesday afternoon walked out to Parliament Street in Delhi demanding justice for the Dalit community. "The way corruption, poverty, unemployment and the real issues are being swept under the carpet and ghar wapasi, love jihad and cows are being given space, we stand against that".
"If an elected representative does not have the right to do so, then this is Gujarat model", Mevani said while addressing the Yuva Hunkar Rally in New Delhi.
"I believe in politics of unity". I believe in the politics of love, not love jihad.
The rally - held on Parliament Street in the heart of the national capital where prohibitory orders are in force through the year - was primarily called to demand the release Dalit outfit Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar Azad. "You have to answer why millions of people are not getting jobs despite promises", he said.
"I want to ask him: what do you choose - Manusmriti or the Constitution", he said.
Although authorities had maintained till the last minute that Mevani and his supporters did not have permission to hold the event, the rally organisers and Delhi police appeared to have reached a compromise later.

Following in the footsteps of other automakers, Kia is getting serious about highly automated vehicles early next decade. Since we're talking about a silent EV, Kia fitted it with new technologies meant to enhance safety for pedestrians.
His supporters turned up with posters bearing his image.
"The way in which Hardik (Patel), Alpesh (Thakore) and Jignesh (Mevani) with the support of the youth in Gujarat brought the BJP down from over 150 seats (target set by BJP in Gujarat) to 99 seats".
Though the crowd at the rally was thin with most chairs empty, Former and current JNU student leaders, including Kanhaiya Kumar, Shehla Rashid and Umar Khalid were present on the stage, metres away from the Parliament Street Police Station. "BJP isn't a party, it's like a brand new washing machine, where something goes in but comes out sparkling clean. We don't have crowds, but we have real, living breathing people".
"To divert the anger of the Marathas who have been suffering due to farmer distress, the RSS-BJP played them against the Dalits at Bhima-Koregaon incident". The rally began at 1pm, and was joined by the students from JNU, and leaders like Akhil Gogoi and even the Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhiushan.
Heavy security has still enveloped the rally, with nearly 15 thousand security police, who have been equipped with water cannons and tear gas bombs to be prepared for any violent situation that arise from the rally.
