Dead man wakes up in mortuary in Spain
11 January 2018, 08:18 | Max Haynes
Jimenez was declared dead at Asturias prison north-west Spain
Gonzalo Montoya, who was convicted of theft of junk, regained consciousness just hours before an autopsy was due to be performed.
Authorities were so certain Jimenez was dead, his body was placed in a body bag after three doctors signed off on his "death".
"The court sent a forensic doctor who was the one who actually confirmed his death". Often, the person's vital signs such as breathing and heartbeat drop to very low levels, so they are almost undetectable, even by doctors.
The first words Jiménez uttered after his awakening were about his wife, and he asked if he could see her.
"We got the original call asking us to attend the jail because an inmate had died and acted according to protocol".
Jiménez's family was informed that he had died and his body was taken to the mortuary at the Forensic Anatomical Institute of Oviedo.
Relatives have been visiting him in hospital and are said to be feeling a mix of relief and indignation, although none of them have yet made any public comment. This theory has yet to be confirmed by medical professionals.
The man was transferred from his coffin and taken to hospital, but was sadly declared dead - for a second time - on arrival.
"It's still not clear at the moment exactly why this occurred", said the prison department spokesman.
Police have opened investigations into his mysterious case, while tests have since indicated his coma was caused by an overdose of drugs, along with severe hypothermia, which may have masked his vital signs.
The article says Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez, an inmate at a jail in the Asturias region of Spain, was dead by three separate doctors. "If he goes in, he will come out as a body", Mr Montoya said.
The prisoner's father, José Carlos Montoya, said he had tried to hang himself in his cell seven months ago.
