Intel Announces 802.11ax Chipsets for Faster Wi-Fi - IT Peer Network

"To help OEMs smoothly transition to the new standard, designs based on Intel's 802.11ac infrastructure chipset-the Inte® Home Wi-Fi Chipset WAV500 Series-can upgrade to 802.11ax with no change to the host SoC".

802.11ax networks should be able to pump four times as much data as today's 802.11ac networks to each device in crowded situations, National Instruments estimates, in part by beaming data toward specific phones, PCs and other devices instead of bathing an entire room with radio signals.

From devices to the data center and every point in between, Intel is collaborating with leaders in the industry to unleash a new era of smart and connected home experiences for consumers - which starts with Intel inside.

Analyst firm IHS Markit forecasts 802.11ax-enabled device shipments will increase from a relative trickle of 116,000 units in 2019 to a flood of 58 million in 2021.

Any household with lots of devices connected to a central router would benefit from 802.11ax, as well.

Intel will be releasing its 802.11ax chipsets this year.

Furthermore, Intel's 802.11ax chipsets are based on Draft 2.0 of 802.11ax, which will be the baseline for 802.11ax certification. This is important since a more mature draft - Draft 2.0 or higher - will be the baseline for 802.11ax certification, and Wi-Fi CERTIFIED* is the only way to truly guarantee multivendor interoperability. "In addition, Intel's new 802.11ax home Wi-Fi chipsets will offer backward compatibility with older Wi-Fi technologies to support a breadth of client devices", Intel added.

Back in early 2017, Qualcomm announced its 802.11ax chipsets, offering better Wi-Fi performance under heavy load with multiple simultaneous users. The company claims that its chipsets will outperform their predecessors operating under the 802.11ac standard by a margin of 40% on a single-client device in terms of peak data rates.

Every device these days depends on Wi-Fi, and a new standard the Wi-Fi Alliance is working on should make it more reliable.
