Bannon's 'treasonous' comment directed at Trump Jr.,…

Steve Bannon was quoted in a new book about the Donald Trump White House as calling Donald Trump Jr. ‘treasonous’ and ‘unpatriotic

Bannon has in the past week faced intense scrutiny for comments he made to author Michael Wolff for the book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.

The committee is probing possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether the Trump campaign was involved. It also covers only Bannon's role on Trump's campaign, as opposed to events that occurred during the presidential transition or while Bannon served as a top aide to Trump in the White House.

The news comes two days after Bannon stepped down from Breitbart, the far-right website he returned to over the summer as executive chairman after being ousted from the White House.

Bannon has already hired lawyer Bill Burck to represent him during the scheduled January 16 testimony, NBC said, citing a source close to the former top Trump advisor.

Trump himself said Wednesday that it "seems unlikely" that he'd give an interview in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

The chief strategist had lost many allies in the West Wing after chief of staff John Kelly's staff shakeup and was blamed for some of the infighting that had paralyzed the White House.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller (2nd L) leaves after a closed meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee June 21, 2017 at the Capitol in Washington, DC.

Breitbart CEO Larry Solov added: "Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions and what he has helped us to accomplish". "It's very common and then they'll come back and say 'oh by the way that was off the record, ' and then you just have to say 'no it wasn't, that's not how it works'". Trump's lawyers have previously stated their determination to cooperate with requests in the probe, which has already resulted in charges against four of Trump's campaign advisers. The Daily Beast first reported on Thursday that he had agreed to the interview.
