12 January 2018, 12:16 | Ross Houston
After some hype over the last few days, Nintendo dropped a Nintendo Direct Mini today and it came with a plethora of announcements. Since the Direct appeared this morning, your friends at Mammoth Gamers have summarized the biggest stories to come out. Previously announced for other platforms, this is the first news of the IP reaching the Nintendo Switch. And if you so choose, you can team up with a buddy by splitting Joy-Cons and playing on a single screen. The first wave, coming out on January 31, will introduce Aegislash and a support set for Mega Rayquaza and Mimikyu. On March 23, the second Wave will bring the battle character Blastoise along with a support set of Mew and Celebi.
They also gave a date for Kirby Star Allies, which will be gracing the NintendoSwitch on March 16th. You will also be able to combine powers together in creative ways.
A definitive Hyrule Warriors Ultimate Edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch that will have all of the DLC content from both the 3DS and Wii U releases, containing every map, mission, and character. Plus there's new costumes for Link and Zelda based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The standout ports include Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. Moreover, new titles like Mario Tennis Aces are also expected this year. This spin-off fighting game includes only the women of the King of Fighters series and features up to two-on-two battles. The free update adds Luigi's Balloon World, as well as new outfits and snapshot filters. It's a new competitive mode that can be accessed by speaking to Luigi in New Donk City. Once you talk to him, you can choose to hide a balloon or find one.
Donkey Kong will be joining the cast as a playable character. It will be a paid DLC set to be released in spring 2018.
As Nintendo mentions, this new game appears to be a return of sorts to the GBA's Mario Tennis: Power Tour, which featured a surprisingly-deep RPG-like story. While it's only 15 minutes long, it's jam-packed with information regarding new titles, updates, re-releases, and remasters for the Switch.
Dark Souls: Remastered, out on May 25th, joins Skyrim and Doom as prominent third-party games getting new life on Nintendo's console. Let us know, and stay tuned for more Nintendo updates as we enter the new year. Many a fan has asked for a remake or port, and they are surely crying tears of delight today. A new exclusive character will be added to the game for the Switch: Joy, a "Japanese computer whiz".
PayDay 2 will cost $49.99 United States dollars when it hits the Nintendo Switch on February 28. Players can also use the Joy-Con controllers to try combat in an all-new way, though the Direct Mini didn't share details on how that mechanic would work. The Switch version of Dark Souls will be include the Artorias of the Abyss DLC and will have improved frame rate and resolution.
While we'll take any excuse to replay Dark Souls for the umpteenth time, we're not entirely sure why this remaster exists.
