Four dozen programs run by nonprofits and government agencies in San Diego County were awarded more than $20 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development grants meant to reduce homelessness, it was announced this week.
Housing for homeless people in San Francisco got a boost Thursday when the federal government announced it is giving the city $9 million more than it did a year ago as part of its annual funding for homeless programs around the nation.

"HUD stands with our local partners who are working each and every day to house and serve our most vulnerable neighbors", Carson said on Thursday. This year San Francisco will get $41 million from the federal government for programs to serve the homeless.
"This funding is critical to local MA programs that are on the front lines of helping those who might otherwise be living on our streets", said David Tille, HUD New England regional administrator, in a statement. "Progress is being made but we must remain resolute in our mutual commitment to more innovatively and effectively address homelessness through a housing-first approach that is evidence-based".
A significant increase in the number of reported persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness, particularly in high-cost rental markets where there is a significant shortage of affordable housing.
According to HUD's 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, homelessness is on the rise. But others familiar with the program said the authority was not equipped to work with homeless people who also need support services beyond housing. However, homelessness among families dropped 5.4 percent.
Across the country, HUD has launched "Continuums of Care" composed of volunteers trying to count the homeless population. They will report these one-night "point-in-time counts" later in the year to establish HUD's 2018 national homeless estimate.
