Need to revamp education system in Kashmir: Gen Rawat

Indian troops prepared to deal with China: Chief of Army Gen Bipin Rawat

India will handle China's 'assertiveness', says army chief

Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday called for a major revamp of the entire government school system in trouble-torn Kashmir, stressing that the youth were being radicalised by the "corrupted" basic education structure and disinformation being spread by madrassas, masjids and social media. He said that all ceasefire violations initiated by India on the Line of Control (LoC) are part of counter-terrorism action where only Pakistan army posts that are being used to launch terrorists into Kashmir are targeted.

Giving the first detailed account that led to the Doklam stand-off between India and China, General Rawat said: "China began constructing the road through the Doklam Plateau in 2000, but in 2016 it appeared that the status quo [of relative positions along the border] would be changed". "China is a powerful country but we are not a weak nation", Rawat told reporters in New Delhi.

"We are examining various dimensions of the proposal", he said.

Addressing the Annual press conference ahead of Army Day on January 15, Gen Rawat said, "You will be surprised that in the government schools of Kashmir, teachers are teaching something that should not be taught".

Rawat, who was talking to reporters, said that minor construction continues to take place in Doklam but previous year the face-off happened because it saw personnel from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) moving in large amount of equipment.

Hundreds of Chinese and Indian troops faced off past year on the Doklam plateau, a small strip close to the intersection between China , India and Bhutan.

He said the Army, having focused its operations in South Kashmir in 2017, would now shift its attention to areas in North Kashmir such as Baramulla, Pattan, Handwara, Kupwara, Sopire and Lolab. Gen Rawat said, "We understand China is a powerful country but we are not a weak nation". The issue was resolved diplomatically in November.

"But to say complete pressure has been put on Pakistan... let us see it is a step by step process. We are prepared to handle", the Army Chief said while assuring that the security forces are manning the border continuously.

Asked about Chinese incursions, he said, "We will not allow our territory to be invaded by anyone". "But we have mechanisms in place with China to defuse any such incidents", he said.
