Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock emailed about bump stocks months before rampage: documents

Unsealed search warrants reveal new details about the Las Vegas massacre that left 58 people dead

Paddock came to Las Vegas with an arsenal - more than 20 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition and spent casings were found in his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. The judge did so in response to a lawsuit filed by CNN and other media organizations.

Authorities said he used anonymous communications devices, including a prepaid cellphone, to throw off any police investigation.

One of the warrants describe the extent to which Paddock went to conceal his actions, saying he "destroyed or tried to hide digital media devices". The third phone, a ZTE model with a Google operating system, was locked and can not be forensically examined, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation hoped to glean more information off it via Google. The FBI special agent who signed the affidavit argued that since only that phone was locked, any information related to a criminal conspiracy would be found on it.

Her boyfriend, Stephen Paddock, shot himself dead after firing from a Las Vegas Strip casino into a concert crowd, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds.

Though investigators had previously said Paddock had no known social media accounts, the records also included requests to access at least four different Instagram accounts which may have been associated with either Paddock or his girlfriend, Marilou Danley.

"While investigators obtained a DNA buccal swab sample from Danley", one search warrant request stated, "she spontaneously stated that her fingerprints would likely be found on Paddock's ammunition because she occasionally participated in loading magazines".

Danley spoke with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents after returning to the United States. "Investigators believe this piece of equipment was utilized in the attack carried out by Stephen Paddock", the affidavit read.

But the documents suggest Danley moved quickly after the shooting to obscure her relationship with the 64-year-old Paddock. Danley returned from a trip to the Philippines days after the shooting, but wasn't arrested when she arrived in the United States.

Danely was cooperating with investigators and that the investigation "to date has not produced any conclusive evidence that Danely aided Paddock, had foreknowledge of his plans, or has been deceptive with law enforcement", according to the documents.

In her statement after the shooting, Danley said she had assumed Paddock was breaking up with her, continuing that it "never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone".

An affidavit notes that Danely's Facebook account was deleted hours after the attack.

Authorities wrote in one filing that they believe Paddock was controlling two email accounts that were exchanging messages discussing weapons used in the attack.

Investigators also revealed that Mr. Paddock may have been treated for "unidentified medical conditions".
