Speaker Ryan on Pres. Trump comments: "First thing that came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful".
Ryan recalled his own family history of emigrating to the United States from Ireland.
After President Donald Trump reportedly referred to African countries that benefit from the USA visa lottery program as "shitholes", House Speaker Paul Ryan lightly rebuked the president on Friday, calling the comments "very unfortunate" and "unhelpful".
He then said their story of overcoming that oppression was "a lovely story of America". He admits efforts toward such a compromise are complicated by reports President Donald Trump referred to Haiti and African countries as "expletive-holes" during a meeting the day before.
The comments from Ryan and Trump all but assure the Republican-held Congress will not move toward its long-held goal in the near future.
Trump on Friday denied describing certain nations as "shithole countries" during a meeting in which he rejected a bipartisan deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. "I think it's important we celebrate that".
"I would like to find a way - and I don't know what exactly that's going to be - how do we get bipartisan consensus to fix these looming, debt problems we've got on the horizon", he said.
Speaker Paul Ryan on Friday afternoon broke his silence and condemned President Trump's remark about "sh*thole countries" from a day earlier.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has previously said he does not think the GOP-majority Senate could pass a welfare reform bill on a partisan basis. But he said he wants it to be part of a deal on border security.
