REVEALING The Queen opened up in a bombshell BBC One interview
She explained she chose to play dress up and mimic the daily routine of the queen to celebrate the second season of the Netflix hit, The Crown, which premiered last month. It was not only too big for the Queen, but also much too heavy along with the rest of the regalia, which is why she wisely practiced wearing it ahead of time by donning it while going about her ordinary day, such as while reading the newspaper or taking her tea. She jokes that she can't look down while wearing the Imperial State Crown - which weighs 2 pounds 13oz (1.28 kilograms).
The mysterious notes are addressed to Queen Mary from George VI and detail a cunning plan to bury the crown jewels under a sally port (a secret entrance to the castle) in separate chambers.
"It's the sort of, I suppose, the, really, as a sovereign", she said.
"Because if you did [look down] your neck would break and [the crown] would fall off", the Queen said, smiling as she tilted her head downwards. Instead, the queen herself pulls the table towards her. Bruce said: "If you look very closely, the table suddenly just goes "woomf" and the crown "woomf" and the crown jeweller is left there with nothing and she says 'well you know, it's my crown'".
"It's only sprung on leather, not very comfortable", she recalled of the carriage. "I mean, it just remains itself".
Giving her personal recollection, the Queen also reveals how she had struggled with her coronation dress, which was embroidered in silk with pearls, and gold and silver thread.
Thompson even had a couple of corgis accompanying her in her royal week out, the signature companions of the real queen. "They were meant to be Queen Elizabeth's earrings", she said. "So there are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they're quite important things".
In the documentary, which airs in full on Sunday January 14, Queen Elizabeth candidly explained that the crown wasn't her only source of discomfort.
Then, back to the serious business of ruling.
