Timeline of protests over 7-year-old Zainab's rape, murder in Pakistan

Kasur police fail to arrest Zainab’s murderer

Arif Nawaz briefed the participants on the brutal rape and murder and efforts of law enforcers to nab the suspect. Dawn reported and quoted the Punjab government as saying that six people, including four policemen, were arrested for opening fire on protestors. Police officers recovered her body from a garbage heap near Zaki Ada.

She had gone to a religious tuition centre near her house in Kasur city, some 50km from Lahore, on January 5 from where a man said to be a "serial killer" abducted her, police said.

"I have nothing to say, I just want justice for my daughter", her mother was quoted as saying.

Zainab's death comes less than three years after a scandal in Kasur when at least 280 children were filmed being sexually abused by a gang of 25 men, who blackmailed their parents by threatening to leak the videos. Moreover, the place where the new suspect is shown walking is located far away from the victim's house. "We are now afraid of letting our children leave the home".

A source in the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) told Dawnthat the agency had received samples collected by Kasur police from the crime scene.

The demonstrators had accused the police of failing to act over the child murders.

The chief minister of Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif visited Ansari's parents to assure them that the perpetrators would be apprehended soon, a provincial government spokesman said.

As word got around, traders shuttered their shops and staged a protest demonstration. They also threw traffic out of gear by burning tyres on Ferozepur Road and chanted slogans against police and local parliamentarians for their alleged apathy. While young activists including students protested for a minor rape victim on the streets, similar feelings were resonated on social media.

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani suggested introducing appropriate legislation and stricter legal implementation in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
