Cong releases list of 23 candidates for Assembly elections in Nagaland

Sources say that most of the political parties are prepared for the election but have not filed their nominations as it would be seen as a defiance of the call to boycott the election. The party also released its list of candidates. Nicky Kire of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and N. Jacob Zhimomi of the Bharatiya Janata Party followed for Kohima Town and Ghaspani-I seats.

For decades, Naga rebel groups have been fighting for Nagalim or Greater Nagaland.

Significantly, the BJP had backed out of an agreement in which all political parties had agreed not to field candidates in the upcoming election if it was held before a solution was reached to the Naga peace process.

It added that the party intents to "spread the message of peace through the colouful cultural presentation and exchange that we will encourage".

"A total of 22 candidates filed their nomination papers".

The core committee of civil organisations and tribal bodies and also the Naga insurgent groups had declared that anyone contesting the elections against "the wishes of the Naga people" would be branded as "anti-Naga".

State JD (U) president Senchumo NSN Lotha and its election campaign committee chairman Y M Humtsoe alleged that there was hardly any governance in the last five years under DAN rule as it was marred by constant infighting for leadership between the NPF and the BJP.

The BJP has since come up with a tentative list of candidates for the election.

"The 20:40 seat-sharing pact between BJP and the NDPP for the 60-member state assembly was not justified since it was the NDPP which approached the saffron party for the formation of an alliance", stated the letter, signed by general secretary of Nagaland BJP Eduzu Theluo.

State BJP unit exuded confidence that they would win all the 20 seats it will contest in the forthcoming assembly elections scheduled for February 27.

"Filing of nominations end on Wednesday and no candidates have filed papers from 43 seats yet", Nagaland chief electoral officer Abhijit Sinha said.

In a statement the CCNTHCO blamed the BJP for being the first party to rescind from the decision not to contest polls.

On the delay in filing of nominations, he said, "We will wait for the major political parties, including the BJP and NPF, to file nomination first".
