Kenya government allows 2 TV stations to resume broadcasting

Kenyan civil rights groups protested on the streets of Nairobi holding placards against the government closure of the three main TV stations

In the first charge Miguna is accused of being present and consenting to the administration of an oath to commit a capital offence namely treason contrary to section 59 (a) of the Penal Code.

The journalists -Linus Kaikai, Larry Madowo and Ken Mijungu- believe that police planned to arrest them and applied to the courts for anticipatory bail, was set at KSh10 0000 (US$983 or about R12 000) each.

Campaigning lawyer Miguna Miguna was arrested on Friday in a dawn raid on his home.

The government had shut down transmission of the four popular TV channels last week when they attempted to broadcast the mock inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the "people's president".

Isaac Okero, president of the Law Society of Kenya, told reporters: "Once again the state is wilfully violating Mr. Miguna's rights by moving him without any notice to his lawyers or his family and, in order to frustrate their access to him, to a court stationed outside Nairobi".

Odinga's ceremony last week proclaiming himself the "people's president" was meant to protest President Uhuru Kenyatta's election win past year. His supporters in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu city in western Kenya clashed with police, who fired tear gas at them.

Mr O'Leary added: "We would, even at this early date, urge extreme caution on investor and analyst assumptions for fares". As talks with other unions now continue, the airline is expected to also extend union recognition to cabin crew.

The government suspended the passports of 14 opposition leaders including strategist David Ndii and financier Maina Wanjigi.

While claiming that the charge sheet is defective and looks suspicious, Miguna's advocates now want the court to direct the Kajiado court to release their client and his file to Milimani court. A government official, who asked not to be named, confirmed its authenticity.

Kenyatta won the August election, and won the repeat election in October as well after Odinga boycotted it, complaining it would not be fair.

In addition to shutting down the television stations, the government briefly detained three opposition politicians who took part in Odinga's symbolic swearing-in ceremony this week.

Also on Monday, police teargassed demonstrators demanding the stations reopen as they tried to march on government offices.
