For the first time in the 91-year history of the Gerber baby brand, a baby with Down syndrome was selected as the company's 2018 "spokesbaby".

Lucas, who is from Georgia, was chosen from 140,000 entries in a 2017 Gerber contest looking for the next face of the brand.

"By choosing Lucas, I believe the message is that babies with Down syndrome are no different from typical babies and can be seen as adorably ideal", said Whitten, the mother of a 14-year-old daughter with Down syndrome.

Lucas's parents said they entered the contest on a whim, but hope to use the opportunity to educate the public about special needs children. "Their team name for our annual fall Buddy Walk is "Super Lucas" and we couldn't agree with that description more!"

New Gerber Baby Lucas Warren flashes his winning smile.

"He's got that twinkle in his eye, people love it".

"He may have Down syndrome, but he's always Lucas first", she explained.

In popular culture, the "Gerber baby" has come to represent the ideal vision of an American infant.

"In a puddle of tears over here.my mama heart is so so thankful.when Bodie was born I believed a lie, that others would not value him as much as I do".

His mom, Cortney Warren, hopes this will increase acceptance of special-needs kids. "They're people first, and their diagnosis is just something they have".

Don't tell Iceland. That country has wiped babies with Down off their territory through a pogrom of eugenic abortion targeting fetuses with that condition. "I hope it shines light to the special needs community, showing that they are just like you and me".
